Transit Mutual's mission:

TMi will be the insurance provider of choice for the transit industry by offering the highest quality, innovative, comprehensive and cost effective products and services that are valued by our members within the State of Wisconsin.

Originally formed in 1981 as a purchasing group called WMTIC (Wisconsin Munincipal Transit Insurance Commission), the group used dollar volume purchasing to reduce the vehicle insurance expenses of transit systems in Wisconsin.

Through a WisDOT grant, and with the help of the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance in Wisconsin, one of the first Wisconsin munincipal mutual insurance companies was incorporated as Transit Mutual Insurance Corporation of Wisconsin. TMi began writing liability coverage for 15 munincipal transit operations on January 1, 1986. In 2005, TMi began offering auto physical damage coverage to its members.

Transit Mutual Insurance Corporation of Wisconsin is a not-for-profit mutual insurance corporation. Located in Appleton Wisconsin, we insure transit vehicles owned by municipalities located throughout Wisconsin.

Our membership includes municipalities as large as Madison and as small as Merrill with many more in between. A niche organization, Transit Mutual offers two lines of coverage to its members:

  • Commercial Auto Liability
  • Auto Physical Damage

Over the last two years our members have enjoyed over $1,500,000 in dividends.

We also offer a variety of risk management services including many safety related and incentive based programs at no additional cost to our members.

A non-traditional insurance corporation, Transit Mutual places a strong emphasis on safety. Some of the benefits offered to TMi members include:

  • Safety Audits
  • Ride Checks
  • Training Opportunities
  • Driving Incentive, Most Improved, and Safety Awareness Programs
  • Scholarships to fund 50% of approved safety related training
